Making molds by vacuum forming wood that I drilled holes in

Using these vacuum formed shapes and boxes as molds to pour resin into with my suspended colored pigments in:

Burnt Umber colour: Oak tree bark pigemnt

Light blue: Red cabbage lake pigment powder 0-3.jpg.11

Beetroot: The powder pigment did no evenly mix all the way through the resin, so I am expected a speckled effect. This reaction was surprising: normally resin takes 24 hours to cure fully, however this block of resin had harden so much in the time it took for me to colour and pour my other shapes that I was not able to use a heat gun on it to reduce the amount of bubbles in the resin. 0-12.jpg.4

Red cabbage dehydrated pigment: To see if I could dissolve the pigment any more I used Arab Gum, normally used for making ink. This created a beautiful magenta ink. When the ink was combined with the resin a change in colour occurred. The magenta became green. From my natural dye and paint experiments I knew that red cabbage is a very volatile organic pigment, reacting violently in terms of colour change to any sort of alkali or acid. There must have been a strong alkali in the resin for the purple to turn green.

That was not the strangest part. The Arab Gum must have reacted with the resin as the resin began to bubble and foam, expanding the mixture with air bubbles. This reaction cured the resin super fast. It cured fully within a few hours, creating a solid snap shot of the moment in time where the resin was bubbling.
